Emile-Charles (Camille) Wauters
1846 - 1933
Brussels, Belguim

Emile-Charles, Camille, Wauters was a Belgian painter who trained in Brussels in the studio of the decorator Charles Albert. He then became a pupil of Jean-François Portaels and in 1867 he spent six months in the studio of Jean-Léon Gérôme in Paris.

He visited Italy and Germany and on his return debuted at the Salon of 1869 with a large historial canvas. Three years later, Wauters caused a stir in Brussels with another large, dramatic historical composition called "The Insane Painter Hugo van der Goes".

Wauters continued his success in exhibitions in Vienna, Paris, Berlin and Munich confirming his position as a leading history painter of his day. His success brought him commissions from Brussels for two more large historical compositions.

He was not as known for his nudes but they were as equally beautiful as his historical works. Many of his nudes were made into postcards, even though many of the art postcards do not identify him as the artists.
