There is little information available on the life of Ange Tissier. As a young person, he was known to have been a student of Paul Delaroche at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and it was probably under Delaroche's tutelage that Tissier became interested in the far Eastern culture.

After his schooling, Tissier became a portrait artist and an Orientalist. Although there is no record of his travels, it is apparent by his work that he traveled to Algeria and developed the typical French interest of the area during the Second Empire.

From 1838 onwards, he was to exhibit at the Salon for the rest of his life. He also painted some genre scenes, particularly Breton and Italian but became accomplished for his Orientalist themes and his canvases reflected the typical French interest in Algeria during the Second Empire.

He died in 1876, leaving behind a small body of work.
