![]() Pedestal Pose ![]() Draped Frontal Pose While the French nudes brought many distasteful images to the minds of Victorians, editors created many classical themes seemingly aimed directly towards artistic interests. Of course, artists were not the true interest for publishers of these images but more of an easy outlet to distribute their products, however, artists did benefit from the production of nude images.
One of the most popular marketing techniques for postcard producers, was advertising to artists through magazines. The ad above appeared in a 1923 issue of "La Beaute". It touts the ease and convenience of using a camera image, offering 75 nude poses, sepia or hand-colored, in the format of postcards, which artists could order through the mail. The images used in these types of ad campaigns were retouched but the ad assures the buyer the images sent to the home are "complete". Among the most popular of these images was the classically seated nude. Photographers and editors alike, focused their efforts on producing images that not only flattered the models, but also reflected a new talent for the possibilities a camera could provide. During this time period, over three times the number of seated poses were produced compared to other available poses. Although most of these photographers will always remain anonymous, the works they created will be admired for years to come. These images and more are available in full-size as a download or on CD.
