| Camille Pissarro was from a family of artists, originating in the Danish Virgin Islands.
This probably had more influence on him than all of the studies of other artists working in the
Impressionist movement of which he was
considered to be the father of their organization.
Spatial ambiguity and the tension between flatness and an illusion of depth are often accentuated rather than eased by the presence of figures. Pissarro traditionally put figures in his landscapes almost to legitimize the genre and give it a readily identifiable sense of scale. In his last works, Pissarro painted with abandonment, permitting the artistic sense within him to exploit daring spatial complexities to the fullest extent. Pissarro was a master of color and his paintings are proof of his effort to take painting to the next level and paint for the sake of painting and not for the sake of art.
