Paintings Techniques of Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro was from a family of artists, originating in the Danish Virgin Islands. This probably had more influence on him than all of the studies of other artists working in the Impressionist movement of which he was considered to be the father of their organization.

Pissarro had a solid handling of his paint, especially in his plein-air landscapes. His diagonal lines reinforced with flattened stripes and a ground level horizontal plane gave his paintings a balance and yet, a contrast at the same time.

In his later style, Pissarro used an unusual weave of canvas, a herringbone type twill which runs horizontal. His paint is thick and buttery. He applies it in separate touches or strokes with a loaded bristle brush, building up layers, wet over dry with some mixing of color wet into wet, His palette is composed of predominately subdued earth colors and dark greens, with accents of bright hues used to pick out reflected light. All of his colors are mixed with varying amounts of white.

Spatial ambiguity and the tension between flatness and an illusion of depth are often accentuated rather than eased by the presence of figures. Pissarro traditionally put figures in his landscapes almost to legitimize the genre and give it a readily identifiable sense of scale. In his last works, Pissarro painted with abandonment, permitting the artistic sense within him to exploit daring spatial complexities to the fullest extent.

Pissarro was a master of color and his paintings are proof of his effort to take painting to the next level and paint for the sake of painting and not for the sake of art.
