The Beautiful Mante Sisters

The daughters of Louis-Amédée Mante; Louise, Suzanne, and Blanche were closely associated with the ballet, through their father's life with the Opera playing the double bass. They were raised Prima Ballerinas, dancing with Cleo de Merode and other famous ballerinas of the day.

While the young girls studied dance, they modeled for many Edgar Degas ballet paintings, as well as, an early Degas painting called "The Mante Family". Degas' love of the Opera and his fascination with photography, led to his association with the girls' father, Amedee. Degas' desire to work with dancers that were similar in appearance helped the Mante sisters become the most famously documented ballerinas of their day. The girls also modeled for their father in many of his beautiful photographs, while he worked to perfect the recreation of fine art through the lens of the camera. Ultimately, Mante would become known for the photographs of his daughters, as "the photographer of beautiful women".

The girls became so well-known their father had them spiritually baptized "The Beautiful Mante Girls" by Maurice Edmond Sailland, known as Curnonsky. Curnonsky was a celebrated journalist in Paris and wrote articles about the beauty of the Mante sisters. Curnonsky, later, was imprisoned as a Russian spy for the use of his pseudonym. He did, however, become famous in his own right, much later in life, for writing French cookbooks.

As adults, all sisters, became professional singers of the Opera. Louise Mante became the most widely celebrated and decorated covers of many known French magazines such "Musica" in 1902.

While, all three of the Mante Sisters achieved fame in their own right, their true success will forever be immortalized through the well-documented art works of Edgar Degas.
