Poses by Jean Agelou, JA

French photographer, Jean Agelou (JA) and his brother George (GA), devoted their lives to photographing and selling images of pretty women during the first twenty years of the twentieth century and with, relatively, little attention.

Although many of JA's images were actually produced for the pleasure of upper-middle class gentlemen, artists also benefited from their work. From 1903-1915, these two men produced literally thousands of images for several magazines popular with artists. The most known of these magazines was "L'etude Academique", which appealed to artists looking for poses that could be purchased through the mail in the form of postcards.

JA photographed women both dressed and undressed but he seemed to prefer a model that would eventually sit down and take off her clothes. Women, interiors, and chairs were trademarks in his career. He marketed his work in any form that would sell in the marketplace, from stereoviews and postcards, to poses for artists and even a multitude of series to other producers.

There are literally millions of pose images still on the market today, attributed to Mr. Agelou. He was a very successful photographer in his day, and a century later, we are still looking!
