| Wet in wet painting means the application of one color over or into another before it dries. Wet in wet painting, or the sharing of wet colors into each other leaving them partially mixed on the surface of the painting is not necessarily synonymous with all prima painting. Wet in wet handling can be used alongside wet over dry techniques in a painting that may be built up over an extended period of time. Oil painting wet over dry indicates that color is applied over paint that has already been allowed to dry. Where these dry areas are executed in a vigorous technique, dragging often results when paint is added, especially if the paint is fairly stiff in consistency. Work executed directly from the chosen subject, in front of any live or real subject in the real world. This is as opposed to subjects worked from the artists' imagination in the absence of a direct model, or work done from another art. With reference to the Impressionists work from nature is often taken to mean work done from out of doors or "plein air", as opposed to landscapes painted in the studio.
