  • Illusionism

  • A technique which deceives the eye into believing an object is real rather than painted.

  • Impasto

  • This is paint that is applied in thick, raised strokes or daubs. It can also refer to a generally heavily loaded paint layer, leaving deliberate brushmarks on the canvas, separate from the blended areas.

  • Impressionism

  • See Impressionism

  • Independent

  • In art, these re painters who are more or less innovative in style and method. They usually reject academic programs. An example of an independent painter would be Thomas Couture.

  • Infra-red photography

  • In art, this is a photographic method which can be used to examine thinly applied paint in order to see an artists' working methods or to establish the authenticity of a painting. The infra-red waves beneath the red end of the color spectrum penetrate the layers of paint to the base canvas, often revealing forgeries.

  • Intonaco

  • A smooth layer of fine plaster placed on top of the arriccio in fresco.

  • Isolate

  • To apply a finish or an oil glaze to preserve ot seal a surface in preparation of future operations. Sometimes used by decorative painters but most often used by pastel painters.
