  • Halftones

  • Halftones are the graduations of tone in painting and drawing which separate the strongest lights from the deepest shadows. They soften the transition from lights to darks, creating an authentic illusion of relief on forms.

  • Hatching

  • This term is used in drawing to indicate the use of parallel strokes or lines placed close together to suggest shadow. Sometimes this term is also used in painting indicating separate strokes of the brush.

  • Hessian

  • This is type of canvas which has a coarse, thick weave.

  • Highlights

  • Also known as lights. These are the parts which are directly illuminated by the fall of light depicted in a painting or drawing. They are normally depicted with thicker, opaque cream or white paint.

  • Hue

  • Hue is part of color. In tube paints, hue indicates a less intense, less pigment version of a pure color.

  • Hemp

  • The fiber from the stem of a plant which makes a strong thread. Often used in decorative painting.
