Hubert Denis Etcheverry's early studies were at the Drawing School in Bayonne. On a grant, in 1888, he went to Paris and studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in the workshop Leon Bonnat.

In 1891 he won the second prize of Rome with a painting called "Jupiter et Mercure reçus par Philémon et Baucis" which now resides in the Museum Bayonne.

As a trained academic painter, in 1895 he exhibited for the first time at the Paris Salon. From then on every year Etcheverrry year presented art at this event.

In 1898 he changed from his traditional techniques of painting to a modern style and this was when he became his own artist. He had a specialty of a worldly and lightly erotic genre. He elegantly painted beautiful portraits of women, beach scenes and the rural life of Bask and Spain.

Etcheverry used postcards to spread his work across Europe and around the world. His painting "Le Vertige" painted in 1903 was copied many times in postcard format, making it the most known of all his paintings.

Hubert Denis Etcheverry died in 1950. He will always be considered one of the better artists of his generation.
