Hand-tinted Color Poses

Most early studios produced a very limited amount of color images. It wasn't until the mid 1920's that hand-tinted images became among the most sought-after images. Studios scrambled to hire artists who could color these small images, fast and with accuracy.

Most of these artists will, forever, remain unknown but one artist, Louis Icart, gave a detailed look at his early experience of painting small images of women actresses while he was looking for other work. It was this job that gave him the confidence to strike out on his own, painting women without photographs underneath.

Several of the largest companies produced hand-tinted images by the millions, trying to meet the insatiable thirst of tourists visiting Paris. They strove for accuracy and excessive attention to detail, trying to make their images stand out against all others. The end result was some of most gorgeous, time-tested images, many still on the market today.

Of all the images produced, the most beautiful are the classical poses created for the artists' market. Companies advertised these images in magazines to artists, offering 75 images in color or sepia, mailed to the home. Of course, no one will ever know how many, if any, artists purchased and used the images but after reviewing thousands of them, it's hard to believe they did not.
