![]() 1920's Bathroom ![]() Caught in Bed Boudoir images have been popular long before the advent of the camera. During the mid-nineteenth century it was quite unacceptable in the Salon exhibitions for artists to depict a nude woman in her boudoir.
Of course, this did not stop artists from painting them. The Impressionists strove to have depictions of everyday "modern life" found as acceptable as mythological cherubs and angels floating around the head of Venus. It wasn't until the mid 1870's that the Salon would add boudoir nudes to their shows. And this, by no means, was acceptable among the majority of the Parisian public. At about this same time, the photographic process was well underway. By the turn of the century, photographers were taking 'boudoir' pictures and selling them to the public. Marketing under the guise of artists' poses, allowed photographers and studios to market these "forbidden" nudes to middle upper class gentlemen. It was no more acceptable in 1907 than it had been fifty years earlier. The 1920's saw a surge of anti-moral behavior including many contrived images of women in their boudoirs. As you will see, everything from showering and dressing to putting on make-up was photographed for marketing images. Producers no longer needed the excuse of "selling to artists" and went straight to the streets of Paris as tourists lapped them up. Only when the postcard era ended in the early 1930's, did the boudoir images cease to be.
