Adhesive Sealant Formula
for
Prevention of Oil Painting Destruction

Oil paintings usually begin to deteriorate from the back. This is a formula designed to seal a canvas from moisture penetration damage.

Ingredients:

  • Beeswax.....3 parts

  • Mastic tears....1 part

  • Technical Procedures

Combine and heat the two ingredients until the resin melts into the wax. If there is foreign matter, strain it through a cheescloth.

Apply the mixture, while hot, to the back of the canvas, using a palette knife. Scrape the coating thinly to the entire surface. Over this layer of adhesive, lay strips of untreated THIN linen canvas. Cover the entire surface.

Apply a second layer of adhesive over the linen strips, pressing them firmly onto the original canvas back. Leave the canvas alone until the resin and the wax mixture cools.

The canvas is now protected from moisture damages.
