Louise Abbéma was born in France, 1859. She was a painter, engraver, sculptor, and an illustrator. She was a pupil of Charles Chaplin andJean-Jacques Henner. In 1876, at the age of 18, she became famous with her portrait of Sarah Bernhardt who would, later, create a sculpture of Abbema. Their close relationship was lifelong. Louise exhibited regularly until 1926 at the Salon of French Artists, receiving an honorable mention for her decorative panels in 1881 and a bronze medal at the Universal Exhibition in 1900. She illustrated for the magazines "Gazette of Fine Arts", "Art" and "La Mer" by René Maizeroy. Her most important portraits were of Sarah Bernhardt, Ferdinand de Lesseps, Don Pedro; Emperor of Brazil, Carlus-Duran, Jean-Jacques Henner and Charles Garnier. Abbema was made Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1906. Louise Abbema died in 1927, leaving a large a body of work including many watercolors, pastels and engravings plus numerous portraits, decorative panels and paintings of flowers.
